Damien House, Congregation of the Sacred Hearts, Tanagh, via Cootehill, Co Cavan
Damien House is located on the Cavan/Monaghan border close to Cootehill, Co. Cavan. In 2010, Damien House became the headquarters for Adventures Retreats Ireland which was an outreach of the Congregation, to offer faith development and outdoor adventure in one package, aimed at schools, parishes and youth groups. In 2013 it became a learning centre for the local Vocational education committee offering reading and writing classes to individuals who wish to improve their skills. In 2018, following renovations, Damien House opened as a respite center, serving the Monaghan Direct Provision center. The center has a capacity to receive c. 175 immigrant people and is usually just short of capacity, as the residents await judgement from the State re their applications to remain in the country. Since early 2021, Damien House has housed a number of families who have fled war in their homelands. Damien House takes its name and inspiration from Father Damien De Veuster SS.CC., who lived and worked with the lepers of Molokai, who brought hope where there was despair and acceptance where there was rejection. "Damien House attempts to give a home from home feeling and has been tastefully redecorated and refurbished to enhance the 200 year old character of the building" Derry Journal "The spark of hope offered by Damien House is all the more special because it was no law of the land that compelled you to begin this project. I am proud to come to a place that could have been used for any number of purposes, but is now being used as an open hearted gift to others." President Mary Mc Aleese, 2002. Adoration and PrayerDamien Oratory is a tranquil sacred space located at the rear of Damien House. It is used as an Adoration Chapel on selected days during the week, an essential part of the Sacred Hearts charism. The oratory is also used for days of reflections/retreats and special masses. Damien Charismatic Prayer Meeting takes place in the Oratory every Wednesday, more information contact Fr Jerry White SS.CC. on 049 5552188 Location |
